STEP 1: Oral & Dental Health Check

Gently pull your dog’s lips to check their teeth and gums. After this take a peek into their mouth- the roof, and under the tongue.
 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• Bits of food stuck on the roof of the mouth, or under the tongue
• A buildup of yellow or brown material (tartar) on the tooth
• Reddened or inflamed gums around the tooth
• Swollen gums
• Foul-smelling breath
• Broken or loose teeth

Never stick your finger in your dog’s mouth without being sure about what you are doing. Get them as relaxed as possible so that they can be more cooperative with you.
 
Ideally, your dog’s gums should be pink and free of any bumps or ulcers. Their teeth should be largely white and the mouth should not have a strong foul smell. 

At least 80% of dogs develop signs of periodontal diseases by 3 years of age if their dental health is neglected.

STEP 2: Ear Check

Start by using your fingers to feel the whole surface of your dog’s ear and take a close look. Note if anything seems unusual. Also, take a whiff to see what it smells like.
 
The area around the ears is also a favorite place for ticks and fleas to hide. Stay vigilant and remove any unwelcome guests that you find on your dog’s body.

• A reddened or inflamed ear canal

If your dog is experiencing problems in their ear, they’ll show signs of discomfort by scratching their ear excessively, flipping their head repeatedly, or turning around in circles.
 
Normally, your dog’s ears should appear to be moist, in a pale pink color, free of any smell.
 
You should routinely check the insides of your dog’s ears, especially if they have big earflaps. The lack of air circulation can increase the chances of an ear infection.
 

STEP 3: Eye Check

Start by observing your dog’s eyes from a distance. Grabbing hold of your dog’s face to stare into their eyes will upset them. Try to get their attention instead.
 
You can have their favorite toy or treat held up in front of them. This will cause them to stare at it and will give you time to get a good look at their eyes.

A healthy dog’s eyes should be clear, bright, and free from any dirt, discharge, or redness. The whites of the eye should be white, not red or yellow.

STEP 4: Skin & Coat Check

Start by examining your dog’s skin and coat. Use both your hands and simultaneously run them through your dog’s body. Down their neck to the chest, over their back, and under the belly. Cover the entire span from head to toe.

STEP 5: Paw Check

Gently spread your dog’s toes apart and inspect the sides of their paw pads. If they are lying down, sit facing their feet and belly so that you can easily inspect them.

Pinch a small amount of skin on your dog’s back gently and release it. If the skin doesn’t snap back to its place immediately, it means your dog may be dehydrated.

Monsoons are here, and it has started raining cats & dogs in almost every part of the country now. The rain gods have finally ‘showered’ their blessings after the long and hot summer.
 
Monsoons are a soothing respite from the scorching heat. The cool breeze and the rains bring the temperatures down. Everything around translates to a scenery fresh out of a book, and it is impossible to resist the joy that falls from the sky.
 
It’s a lovely time to take our pets out for long walks. But the rainy season also brings along a set of problems for our furry little friends. Come monsoons, and itchy skin, infections, pests, and water-borne diseases are the talk of every pet-household. But a few simple tips can go a long way in keeping your pet radiant and shining, even when the sun wouldn’t.

Here are 8 things you can do to ensure the monsoon is an enjoyable time for you and your dawgie:

1. Keep ‘em clean ‘n’ dry

You can go enjoy that dance with your dawgie in the rain showers. But make sure to come home and wash your pet with warm water and an anti-fungal soap or shampoo. This is especially important if you live in an urban area. The high pollution levels in cities often cause the rain to be acidic in nature. This can harm your pet’s skin & coat, and must be washed away to prevent the onset of rashes or skin diseases. Washing with plain water is great; the antimicrobial shampoo completely alleviates the risks of an infection. Bacteria and other microorganisms need a warm and moist environment to reproduce and multiply. A dog’s fur in the monsoon is like Ibiza for them. Make sure it’s always clean and dry. Use a fresh towel or even a blow dryer, if needed.
 

 

2. Protect the paws

Pet paws are much more sensitive than they look. Therefore, if you take your pet out for a walk during the monsoon, make sure their paws are protected. Apply a thin coat of paw butter (Vaseline + Coconut Oil makes a great DIY recipe) before taking them out.
 
Once they’re back, wash their paws with lukewarm water to get rid of any dirt or debris that may get stuck between the pads. Dry the paws thoroughly after you’ve washed them. Inspect the paws regularly for cuts and bruises. Rain often washes off sharp pieces of glass or metal scraps out in the open. Your pet may accidentally step over them and get hurt. Don’t ignore any wounds during the monsoon. They can catch infection really soon.
 

3. Check ears and coat, often

Check your dog’s ears and coat for ticks, fleas or other pests. Monsoon is also the happy season for these pests. They often crawl and take refuge in your dog’s moist fur, especially if your pooch tends to venture into tall grass or short shrubs during his walks. Hence, investigate your pets for ticks & fleas often. Run your fingers through their coat, near their abdominal region, under the limbs, neck, and around their ears and stop and study every bump or knot you encounter. 4. Boiled water only

Even though you must always give clean and safe water to your pet, even more caution is needed during the monsoon. This is because the chances of your pet getting water-borne diseases are higher than ever during this time. Always maintain a steady source of clean drinking water, boiled and cooled, to avoid diarrhea or an upset tummy.
 

5. Fiber up his diet for monsoon

There may be times when the downpour is so heavy that you may not be able to take your pet out for a walk. If your pet does not get the exercise, he may end up with an irritable bowel. To ensure that his poop cycle remains unaffected, you should add natural fiber to your pet’s diet. This can be done by adding sweet potatoes, pumpkin, steamed green beans and fruits like muskmelons and apples. This will keep constipation woes at bay. Be sure not to overdo the fiber intake as this may lead to bloating, gassy stomach, constipation, cramping, and diarrhea.
 

6. Create a secure space

It’s not uncommon, however, for people to go overboard amidst the festive high and include pets and other animals around them in their happiness. But this celebration often turns into extreme pain and discomfort for our furry friends. Deliberate or accidental, exposure to colors wreak havoc on the animals’ health and well-being. Forced play or hooliganism can result into aggression, trauma and even depression in pets & strays.
 
Here are some simple tips to ensure that your pet and the stray animals around have a happy and safe Holi as well:
 

Your pets are best away from colors, wet or dry. Most commercial colors available in the market today (even the herbal ones) have quantities of Zinc, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, Nickel, Copper, Mercury, Iron, Silica and Asbestos in the form of Sulphates, Sulphites, Bromides and Oxides. These compounds are known to cause allergies, asthma, irritations, dermatitis, organ failure and cancers.
 
If you’ve ever accidentally licked the Holi colors, you know how disgusting they taste. You have probably experienced skin rashes, irritations, allergies yourself. The smell of the colors or ever accidentally inhaling some has also given you the swoon. Now imagine all this with your dog. He’s obviously sure to lick the colors off, his skin and coat is extra sensitive to these chemicals and they can smell the odors and inhale the toxic colors more likely than we do.
 
Symptoms like loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, sneezing, coughing, discharge from nostrils, excessive thirst are all indications of Holi poisoning. These colors can cause burning and itching sensation, reddening and blindness if they come in contact with your dog’s eyes. They can also result in a range of skin issues including shedding, rashes, patches, cuts, abrasions and sores.
 
Puppies, senior dogs and dogs with short coat are more likely to falling victim to these colors, because sparsely coated regions of body are commonly affected by these colors. If inhaled, these chemicals can cause nasal irritation and possibly respiratory allergies or infections. Breeds with shorter snout are at a particularly higher risk.

Store the colors in a safe place in the house, out of your dog’s reach, especially if your dog is a curious one. Don’t engage your dog in color play. Remember, what may be ‘safe and herbal’ for you may still not be safe for your dogs. If absolutely necessary, use turmeric, kumkum, neem or henna powder, or beetroot juice as pet-friendly colors to play Holi with your furry friends.
 

Keep water and moisture away from your pet’s skin & coat. Holi occurs during a difficult season. The weather is getting warmer during the days and the temperature is ideal to promote microbial growth. Even a small amount of moisture on your dog’s coat can result in a bacterial or fungal infection. If the dog is wet for too long and is exposed to colder evening or morning breeze, he can catch cold, fever or even pneumonia.
 
Water balloons thrown by kids are a particular menace to dogs. Not just the color or water, sometimes the balloons can also hurt the dog. It’s best to keep the pets indoor and dry during Holi.
 

What’s a festival without delicious food and sweets?! The traditional gujiya is the heart and soul of the festival of Holi. But go easy while feasting your dog to them. Sugar, artificial sweeteners, chocolates, raisins and nuts are some common ingredients of Indian sweets – most of which are toxic for dogs. Keep your pets clear of sugar-free desserts. Xylitol, a common sugar-substitute can be fatal for your dog.

Important Things to Remember during Holi

If you have kids at home or in the neighborhood, educate them not to play Holi with the pets and strays around. Stop anyone from abusing or mistreating an animal or throwing colors or water on them.
 
If your pet or any other animal has been colored, please dust off the dry colors or wash them off using running water. Please refrain from using kerosene, turpentine or alcohol to remove colors from your pets. These solutions will rather hurt them in the process. If needed, a nice bath with gentle shampoo should be enough to clean the colors off your pets. Should you see any rashes or reactions on the skin, apply coconut oil on the affected areas. Consult a vet if the problem persists.
 
If the colors have entered the eyes or nose of the animals, wash them off with running water and allow the furry to rest. Seek medical help immediately if irritation persists.
 
If your pet has licked or otherwise accidentally ingested the colors, try inducing a vomit to get the toxins out of the body. Ensure that your pet has ample water to drink and watch out for any signs of poisoning. Rush to an emergency vet immediately if your furry baby shows signs of hyperactivity, palpitation, seizures or stroke.

Obesity is another issue for dogs. The high amount of carbs may cause weight gain in your pooch.
 
Ethanol poisoning and toxicosis can occur if the bread yeast ferments in your dog’s stomach. It may cause bloating of stomach and eventually prove fatal for your dog. Xylitol present in bread is another thing to be careful about.
 

What is Gluten Intolerance in Humans & Pets?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye & barley. Many people are intolerant towards gluten and its consumption can lead to diarrhea, constipation, bloating (swelling of the stomach), abdominal pain, fatigue, etc. in humans. Many people confuse gluten intolerance with celiac disease which is an auto-immune disease, but they both are completely different.
