Dogs teach us everything. From bravery to empathy, they train us how to become better humans. Our history is full of examples of super dogs who have changed its course. Be it going to space, or helping survivors out after a disaster, dawgies have done so much for the world that it is impossible to ever repay them. The world is a safer and lovelier place today because of the dawgies who have helped us make it.

We’ve compiled a list of dawgies who have changed the world for the better:
 

1. Laika

The first dog to go into space, Laika was originally a stray dog named Kudryavka. She was sent into space to set an example for the earthlings that life is possible in space. She proved that living organisms were capable of surviving the launch process, the orbit and the weightlessness of space. Her sacrifice will never be forgotten by humanity. Had it not been for her, we wouldn’t know anything about what lies beyond.

 

2. Balto

He was the lead sled dog on the last leg of a famous life saving medical delivery to Alaska in 1925. Diptheria had taken the city of Nome (in Alaska) by a sweep. Delivery of antitoxins was required to stop the infection from spreading. It was so cold that there were no modes of transport available. A pack of dogs with Balto as their head, led the sled to Nome with their sled driver Gunnar Kaasen, despite the freezing weather. When he made it None after 7 days of travel, Balto’s arrival was celebrated all across the city.

 

3. Apollo

Minutes after the dangerous 9/11 attack, with leaps of fire, and debris falling everywhere, this courageous dog helped in rescuing about 20 people. Awarded the Dickin Medal, he received the prize on behalf of all the search and rescue dogs who helped save lives in the attacks that brought the country to a standstill.

 

4. Smokey

Originally a 4-pound Yorkshire from the jungle of Papua New Guinea, Smokey was purchased by an American soldier Bill Wynne. Wynne trained her and she accompanied him to the World War 2. There, she saved Bill’s life by warning him about an incoming fire on a transport ship. She is memorialized with a statue at Lakewood, Ohio.

 

5. Sgt. Stubby

Stubby was a Pitbull mix who made his way into the World War 1. Shortly after he arrived, his unit was hit by a gas bomb. After that, he memorized the smell, and using his ears and scent-glands, was always able to alert his unit about an incoming gas attack. They then wore gas masks in time to protect themselves. In the coming years, he sniffed out a German spy, earning him the promotion to a Sergeant. He’s the only dog to ever receive such a promotion through combat.

 

6. Gander

Originally from Canada, Gander was so strong that he could pull a sled full of children. But in one incident, he caused massive injury to one of them and was thus given to the army. During the battle of Hongkong, this courageous dog was able to sense that a grenade had been thrown by the Japanese. He quickly carried it away from his comrades, and towards the Japanese who threw it, saving the life of his squad of 175 comrades and killing the opposition.

 

7. Barry

Barry, the St. Bernard is one of the most famous search and rescue dogs in history. He braved the freezing weather and an ongoing blizzard to make his way to save a ship which had 40 people on it. Working entirely on his own, he was able to rescue each one of them. In his honor, one dog in the rescue battalion of Switzerland is always named Barry to carry his legacy forward.

 

8. Chips

When his unit came under a fire attack, Chips broke himself away from his handler, launching an attack at the firing enemies. He saved his comrades from the fire and the debris, and single-handedly saved the lives of many soldiers. Chips is recognized all over the world for showing unflinching courage even in the face of atrocities.

 

9. Zanjeer

Named after the 1973 Bollywood superhit starring Amitabh Bachchan, this Dawgie is correctly Mumbai’s superhero. He saved countless lives in 1993 blasts by detecting over 3 tonnes of RDX, 600 detonators, 249 hand grenades and over 6 tonnes of live ammunition. Zanjeer was laid to rest with state honors on November 16, 2000. He is still remembered fondly by Mumbai Police and citizens.

 
Across the world, there are so many dawgies who do little acts of bravery and go unrewarded. It’s because they don’t do it for the honor, they do it because they know that one must protect the things they love. And their love knows no limits or conditions. Dawgies are smart creatures, who teach us so much about life, with every little thing that they do. They teach us how to live. You don’t break up, fight, divorce, have differences, get bored or move on in life. Your pet is the one you’ll always come home to no matter what life puts you two through. That’s some serious kind of commitment, that we can all agree on, humans can barely keep up with. Your pet will always be the face you wake up to, the ear to all your rants and the best hugs and cuddle provider ever.
 

3. They protect you

One of the best things about your pet is that subconsciously, they sense danger way before you do. They realize by your actions if you’re uncomfortable and need to be taken out of a conversation, or if you’re in a place where you shouldn’t be, and they drag you out of it. They can fight the world for you. No wonder why so many dawgies in history have been awarded for their valiance in troubled situations. Even if it’s just a friend who makes you uncomfortable, or if a thief in the middle of the night, your pet will protect you with everything he has.

4. They give you the best cuddles

If you’re low on the cuddle meter, they know just how to fill it back up to the brim. Be it your couch, your car, or out on the street, your pet believes that the best place to cuddle is everywhere. And when they are in your arms, that’s when they are the happiest; and you can always see it in their eyes.
 

 

5. They know when you’re down

Like Doris Day perfectly said, “When you are deeply troubled, there are things you get from the silent devoted companionship of a dog that you can get from no other source”. They won’t let you go through anything alone. They may even start to bring you their favorite things just to see a smile on your face. Even when you feel worthless, they’ll make you feel like a zillion dollars, and won’t quit until they are successful.
 

6. They’re always happy to see you

That tail tells you everything you need to know about how much your pet loves you. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been gone for 5 minutes or 5 hours, whenever you come back home, you’ll always be welcomed with intense licking, tail wagging, cuddles and that feeling of true reciprocated love. Also, you can never really overstay your stay.
 

7. They teach you little things (the most important ones) about life

Having a pet teaches you really small, but the most important things about life. Like, life is short, so get all the cuddles you can. Or if you love someone let them know loud and clear while there is time. That sometimes your patient ear and presence is the best advice you can give someone when they are low; and that it’s never a bad time to munch on some treats!
 

 

8. They inspire you to be a better person

They teach us so much about our own lives, from the little things that they do for us. By being there for us, they teach us how to be there for others. They show us that compassion, gratitude must always be felt. That on all opportunities, we must never be afraid to show it. They teach us how to protect the ones we love, and that sometimes when all words fail, that our presence is enough to erase all the sadness there is.

It is more essential now than ever that pet parents adopt instead of shopping for their pets. INDogs, Indies, Desi, Streeties, Superstars – whatever you call them, there is no denying that our Desi Dogs are no less than pedigree dog breeds; *whispers* that most Indians are obsessed with. They’re strong, they’re loving, and overall cuddle bundles! Years of the portrayal of Dawgies in the media and our innate love for everything foreign has influenced Indians to prefer pedigreed dogs and well, let’s just say it, sidelined our Desis. But there are more than enough reasons for why one has to love these Desi Boys and Girls and absolutely none why one shouldn’t. We’ve put down our top reasons to be smitten by INDogs.

1. Best Dogs for Indian Climate

The Indies are called so because they are indigenous or native to our land. They’ve been here for the longest time and have bodies that were made for India’s tropical and humid climate. When you adopt a pedigreed breed like a Siberian Husky or Saint Bernard, you are making them live in conditions their bodies were not designed to cope with. Their thick coats were meant to keep them warm in chilly conditions. Which is the reason why many pedigreed dogs in India suffer during summers, with dehydration, loss of appetite, anorexia. INDogs, on the other hand, are native to our climatic conditions. Needless to say, they also have a stronger immune system and are prone to lesser genetic diseases. They weren’t bred in terrible conditions, neither were their genes tampered with.
 

 

2. Low-Maintenance and Easy on your Pocket

First up, you need not pay the breeder who bred them, a few thousands to get them home. INDogs are easily available with shelters and rescuers for adoptions at all times. They are strong little dawgies with a solid immune system. They do not fall ill often when given the right nutrition and exercise. Which in turn means lesser trips to the vet. They also have shorter coats and do not shed a lot. Hence you do not have to get them groomed often or spend a lot of time cleaning up dog hair.

Desi Dogs are extremely smart and contrary to popular opinion can be trained very easily. Their street life makes them highly independent which also makes them apt for the big city life. Also, who deletes cat pictures, it’s such a heartbreaking thing to do!
 

6. Cardboard boxes are never a waste

Kitties can be so low-demands sometimes! All they need is the box from your delivery and it’s the happiest day of their lives. You know if you’ve got them a present and they got more excited about the box it came in than what the box had inside.
 

 

7. What are black clothes?

Your rocker chic era has come to an end. Since your cat needs to try on all your clothes before you do, or roll all over you once you have them on, all your black clothes are now mere cat fur sweaters. But eh, what do 9 black leggings and 15 black t-shirts got over the love of your life?
 

8. Cat videos are the ultimate entertainment!

Who needs TV series or movies? Cat’s are undoubtedly the most entertaining creature to have walked the earth and cat videos the ultimate form to capture their awesomeness. Too bored? Watch cat videos! Can’t sleep? Watch cat videos! Can’t work? Um, don’t watch cat videos. Seriously, finish the work up, curl up in bed and then, you know it.
 

 

9. Every kittie deserves love

You find it your duty as the esteemed cat lady to share the love with every kittie and catto you spot, barring none. Your heart aches when you see one in distress. And you’d do all you could to give them good health and safety. For all the good deeds you do, we’re extremely proud of you!

The Manoj Bajpayee and Siddharth Malhotra starrer, is a Netflix favorite. The showstopper of the movie, however, is Naseeruddin Shah, the guard with his adopted stray dogs Babloo and his gang. The dogs play a pivotal role in the movie as Shah decides to blow the whistle on the corrupt administration only after the dogs are kicked out of the compound that he watches over. In a heartwarming scene, Shah also talks about how Babloo and the gang have changed his life for good, something most dog lovers would relate with.
 

 

2. Kala (2018)

This Rajinikanth starrer is all set to leave you wanting for more action. Mani is the name of a street dog from Chennai who plays Rajinikanth’s shadow in the movie. Mani shot to fame when his role received adoration from viewers across all ages and dialects. The movie is based on an attempt by a powerful minister to evict the slum dwellers of Dharavi, which happens to be the largest slum in India as well as Asia, and one man’s (Rajinikanth’s) attempt to bring him to justice. Everyone believes that Rajini is dead, but then Mani carries on the justice Rajini set out for.
 

 

3. It’s Entertainment (2014)

This movie is centered around a dawgie named ‘Entertainment’. As the plot moves forward, one realizes that Entertainment is the heir to a multi-millionaire’s property. The whole movie revolves around everyone trying to get a piece of this property after Entertainment’s owner passes away. The cast includes stars like Akshay Kumar, Mithun Chakraborthy, and Johnny Lever. The movie is truly an entertaining watch as the pooch manages to escape all the hindrances created by people who have an eye for his rightful property.
 

 

4. Chillar Party (2011)

Chillar Party focuses on a stray dog named Bhidu, and his hooman Fatka. Initially treated like garbage of the society, Fatka and Bhidu befriend other children and slowly form a large gang. All is well until the local politician decides to catch all the strays. It’s fun to watch the kids taking the front foot to save Bhidu.
 

 

5. Khoon Bhari Maang (1998)

In the movie, Rekha survives a crocodile attack and seeks revenge on the people who tried to kill her. She comes back with a plastic surgery and her dog is the first one to recognize her. Towards the end of the movie, he (literally) takes a bullet for her and saves her life.
 

 

6. Halo (1996)

The movie is about a 7-year-old who is on a mission to find her lost pup, Halo. As she parades through the dark corners of Mumbai, the girl finds her pup with an elderly couple and a child with special needs. Even though she really wants the pup back, she soon understands that the other child needs Halo more. This movie is a real tear jerker!
 

 

7. Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994)

Had it not been for Tuffy, the Indian Spitz, the movie wouldn’t have been even half as entertaining. In the movie, Tuffy not only plays a biased umpire who makes the audience laugh but also manages to unite Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the closing montage as the audience cheered on!
 

 

8. Bol Radha Bol (1992)

This Rishi Kapoor starrer is a lesson on dawgie loyalty. Rishi Kapoor goes back to his village to lay claim on his property but finds out that he has an impostor to challenge. In the end, it is revealed that the dog who was previously antagonistic towards Moti was actually an impostor too, but Moti understood his master’s sadness and took it all. A must watch!

This Raj Kapoor starrer is to-date famous for its soundtrack, which includes hits like “Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan,” and is a must watch for all pooch lovers. In the movie, Raj Kapoor befriends a woman and her dawgie, and they form a circus troupe. Their bond grows stronger with each performance they are led to deliver, but everything changes when the dog, Moti, is captured by the municipality officials to reduce the stray population in the area.

2. That food is the most important thing

If there’s anything that dawgies are punctual about, it’s their food. A dawgie’s loyalty to food timings is undebatable. They know that food is the coal that makes them roll, and they take it very seriously. Even as puppies, dawgies know their priorities.
 

3. Exercise is the road to happiness

A tired dog is a happy dog. And dawgies always make sure that we get that walk too. They cannot function without their daily exercise, and push us to take them for a walk. In the process, they know they’re doing us a major favor by teaching us the importance of staying fit.

4. Live in the moment

Even though we wish a life of a thousand years for our pets, we know that their time is short. Watching them grow from puppies to seniors, we learn that our time here is short too. So we must live in the moment, and with an open heart.

If you’ve ever had the golden opportunity of being greeted by tailwags and facelicks when you get back home, you’d know the amount of enthusiasm your pet displays on seeing you. They teach us that if we love someone, we must always let them know. Dawgies know that love is rare and is a symphony that needs to be played out loud.
 

 

9. Loyalty is a virtue of love

Ever so loyal, dawgies teach us so much about human relationships. They not only teach us how to initiate one, but how to also keep one alive. Dawgies know that it doesn’t take much to be in love, but loyalty is what it takes to stay in love.

No matter how small they are, dawgies know that nothing in life comes easy. The trick is to keep digging, and hope the treasure surfaces. And even if it doesn’t, there’s always a new place to start at. Isn’t there?
