Dogs teach us everything. From bravery to empathy, they train us how to become better humans. Our history is full of examples of super dogs who have changed its course. We’ve compiled a list of dawgies who have changed the world for the better:
 

1. Laika

The first dog to go into space, Laika was originally a stray dog named Kudryavka. She was sent into space to set an example for the earthlings that life is possible in space. She proved that living organisms were capable of surviving the launch process, the orbit and the weightlessness of space. Her sacrifice will never be forgotten by humanity. Had it not been for her, we wouldn’t know anything about what lies beyond.

 

2. Balto

He was the lead sled dog on the last leg of a famous life saving medical delivery to Alaska in 1925. Diptheria had taken the city of Nome (in Alaska) by a sweep. Delivery of antitoxins was required to stop the infection from spreading. It was so cold that there were no modes of transport available. A pack of dogs with Balto as their head, led the sled to Nome with their sled driver Gunnar Kaasen, despite the freezing weather. When he made it None after 7 days of travel, Balto’s arrival was celebrated all across the city.

 

3. Apollo

Minutes after the dangerous 9/11 attack, with leaps of fire, and debris falling everywhere, this courageous dog helped in rescuing about 20 people. Awarded the Dickin Medal, he received the prize on behalf of all the search and rescue dogs who helped save lives in the attacks that brought the country to a standstill.

 

4. Smokey

Originally a 4-pound Yorkshire from the jungle of Papua New Guinea, Smokey was purchased by an American soldier Bill Wynne. Wynne trained her and she accompanied him to the World War 2. There, she saved Bill’s life by warning him about an incoming fire on a transport ship. She is memorialized with a statue at Lakewood, Ohio.

 

5. Sgt. Stubby

Stubby was a Pitbull mix who made his way into the World War 1. Shortly after he arrived, his unit was hit by a gas bomb. After that, he memorized the smell, and using his ears and scent-glands, was always able to alert his unit about an incoming gas attack. They then wore gas masks in time to protect themselves. In the coming years, he sniffed out a German spy, earning him the promotion to a Sergeant. He’s the only dog to ever receive such a promotion through combat.

 

6. Gander

Originally from Canada, Gander was so strong that he could pull a sled full of children. But in one incident, he caused massive injury to one of them and was thus given to the army. During the battle of Hongkong, this courageous dog was able to sense that a grenade had been thrown by the Japanese. He quickly carried it away from his comrades, and towards the Japanese who threw it, saving the life of his squad of 175 comrades and killing the opposition.

 

7. Barry

Barry, the St. Bernard is one of the most famous search and rescue dogs in history. He braved the freezing weather and an ongoing blizzard to make his way to save a ship which had 40 people on it. Working entirely on his own, he was able to rescue each one of them. In his honor, one dog in the rescue battalion of Switzerland is always named Barry to carry his legacy forward.

 

8. Chips

When his unit came under a fire attack, Chips broke himself away from his handler, launching an attack at the firing enemies. He saved his comrades from the fire and the debris, and single-handedly saved the lives of many soldiers. Chips is recognized all over the world for showing unflinching courage even in the face of atrocities.

 

9. Zanjeer

Named after the 1973 Bollywood superhit starring Amitabh Bachchan, this Dawgie is correctly Mumbai’s superhero. He saved countless lives in 1993 blasts by detecting over 3 tonnes of RDX, 600 detonators, 249 hand grenades and over 6 tonnes of live ammunition. Zanjeer was laid to rest with state honors on November 16, 2000. He is still remembered fondly by Mumbai Police and citizens.

 
Across the world, there are so many dawgies who do little acts of bravery and go unrewarded. It’s because they don’t do it for the honor, they do it because they know that one must protect the things they love. And their love knows no limits or conditions. Why Do I Need To Check My Dog’s Health At Home?

Our pets cannot communicate in our language and mostly only visit vets annually for their vaccinations. Many things can change through the course of 12 months and it is crucial to be sure that your pet is in the best health that they can be. 
 
Learning how to do a primary dog health assessment at home can prove beneficial in unavoidable situations where you find it difficult to take your pet to the vet. Regular health checks at home help you notice any changes in your pet’s body early. This can help you seek the right treatment sooner.
 
While veterinarians can do a more thorough checkup for your pet, home health checks can be stress-free for your dog. You can even make these a part of their routine. 
 

How Can I Do An At-Home Health Check For My Dog?

An at-home dog health assessment needs to be a holistic check of the different aspects of your pet’s health and well-being. For our quick 9-Step Check we recommend focusing on some key health indicators.
 
These include your pet’s:

It’s best to do the checkup in a quiet area of your house that is free of any distractions that might make your dog anxious or worried.
 

 

STEP 1: Oral & Dental Health Check

Gently pull your dog’s lips to check their teeth and gums. After this take a peek into their mouth- the roof, and under the tongue.
 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• Bits of food stuck on the roof of the mouth, or under the tongue
• A buildup of yellow or brown material (tartar) on the tooth
• Reddened or inflamed gums around the tooth
• Swollen gums
• Foul-smelling breath
• Broken or loose teeth
• Holes in the teeth, caused by decay

Never stick your finger in your dog’s mouth without being sure about what you are doing. Get them as relaxed as possible so that they can be more cooperative with you.
 
Ideally, your dog’s gums should be pink and free of any bumps or ulcers. Their teeth should be largely white and the mouth should not have a strong foul smell. 

At least 80% of dogs develop signs of periodontal diseases by 3 years of age if their dental health is neglected.

STEP 2: Ear Check

Start by using your fingers to feel the whole surface of your dog’s ear and take a close look. Note if anything seems unusual. Also, take a whiff to see what it smells like.
 
The area around the ears is also a favorite place for ticks and fleas to hide. Stay vigilant and remove any unwelcome guests that you find on your dog’s body.
 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• If any area of the ear is painful
• Excessive wax buildup
• A reddened or inflamed ear canal
• Newly discovered lumps or bumps
• Movement in the ear canal, caused by ear mites
• A yeasty smell

If your dog is experiencing problems in their ear, they’ll show signs of discomfort by scratching their ear excessively, flipping their head repeatedly, or turning around in circles.
 
Normally, your dog’s ears should appear to be moist, in a pale pink color, free of any smell.
 
You should routinely check the insides of your dog’s ears, especially if they have big earflaps. The lack of air circulation can increase the chances of an ear infection.
 

STEP 3: Eye Check

Start by observing your dog’s eyes from a distance. Grabbing hold of your dog’s face to stare into their eyes will upset them. Try to get their attention instead.
 
You can have their favorite toy or treat held up in front of them. This will cause them to stare at it and will give you time to get a good look at their eyes.
 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• Excessive rubbing
• Squinting
• Snotty discharge
• Foreign objects in or near the eye
• Scratches 
• Cloudiness or discoloration
• Swollen eyelids

Direct stare might be taken as a form of aggression by dogs, however, you can still notice a lot of signs of trouble from a distance.
 
A healthy dog’s eyes should be clear, bright, and free from any dirt, discharge, or redness. The whites of the eye should be white, not red or yellow.
 
Your dog’s vascular and neurological systems are both connected to their eyes. This makes them a great source of information; not just their eye health, but overall health in general.
 

 

STEP 4: Skin & Coat Check

Start by examining your dog’s skin and coat. Use both your hands and simultaneously run them through your dog’s body. Down their neck to the chest, over their back, and under the belly. Cover the entire span from head to toe.
 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• Lumps or bumps on the skin
• Any sore areas
• Greasy or moist areas
• Redness on the skin
• Dandruff or dryness
• Attached ticks
• Dirt buildup

If your dog expresses pain or discomfort when you touch certain areas, do not continue to touch or inspect. Observe it from a distance, and make a note to mention it to your veterinarian.
 
Ideally, the skin and coat should feel smooth and healthy. It should be free of bumps, grease, and redness.

It has been estimated that from 20% to 75% of cases seen in the small animal veterinarian practice have skin problems as a chief or concurrent owner complaint.

STEP 5: Paw Check

Gently spread your dog’s toes apart and inspect the sides of their paw pads. If they are lying down, sit facing their feet and belly so that you can easily inspect them.
 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• Brittle or dry paws
• Matted fur between toes
• Redness
• Bleeding
• Discharge
• Torn nails
• Foreign objects stuck between paw pads

Many dogs don’t like their paws being held or poked at. Sore paws can be very painful for your pet, so be careful and patient to avoid getting accidentally bitten.
 
A healthy dog’s paw pads will be smooth to touch, with little to no abrasions.
 
Your pet’s feet are impacted the most by the wear and tear during their exercise and daily walks. They should be checked as regularly as possible to prevent any serious damage.
 

STEP 6: Activity Check

It is typically easy to tell if your dog starts to act differently. They may look uninterested in playing, going for a walk, or taking part in activities they usually enjoy.
 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• Lethargy and weakness
• Excessively tired, slow, or droopy
• Lacking energy or enthusiasm
• No reaction to stimulation
• Shaking or restlessness

Your dog will work very hard to appear healthy on the outside so it’s extremely important to be observant of the slightest of changes in their daily activity.
 
A change in enthusiasm and activity can also be a normal sign of old age in pets. For puppies and adult dogs, it is crucial to maintain a good level of daily activity to avoid serious health issues in the future.
 

STEP 7: Poop & Digestion Check

Scooping up your dog’s poop can give you a direct insight into their health. Look for “the three C’s” when examining your dog’s poop: Compactness, Color, and Consistency.
 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• Blood in your dog’s stool
• Black or tarry poop
• Greasy poop
• Wormy poop
• Diarrhea

A healthy dog’s poop will be moist, chocolate brown in color, and sized proportionately to the amount of food your dog ate.
 
Any changes in your dog’s schedule like a recent change in diet can affect their poop. However, be mindful to avoid this change in poop from going out of hand or lasting for more than 3-4 days.

STEP 8: Water Intake & Hydration Check

Water is the most essential and yet the most underrated nutrient for all living beings. You can recognize dehydration in your dog by checking their skin elasticity. Pinch a small amount of skin on your dog’s back gently and release it. If the skin doesn’t snap back to its place immediately, it means your dog may be dehydrated.
 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• Sunken eyes
• Dry nose and gums
• Dry skin and/or dandruff
• Weakened hind legs
• Lethargy and tiredness

Providing ample fluids through water and moist foods can restore your dog’s water and electrolyte balance. Always ensure your dog has access to adequate water throughout the day.

Dogs need to consume fluids equivalent to 10-12% of their body weight a day. For example, a 30 kgs dog should ideally consume at least 3 liters of water a day across their food, snacks, drinks, etc.

STEP 9: Weight & Body Condition Check

The best way to assess your dog’s condition is by using the Body Condition Score system. Simply look at your dog from the top and side and feel their ribs to understand where they stand on the scale.

 
PROBLEMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

• Sudden weight loss or gain
• Skipping meals
• No or little visible waistline
• Lethargy

Rate your pet on the BCS chart. If they are straying away from being a 5, make immediate changes to their lifestyle to prevent obesity. Finding and maintaining your dog’s ideal weight can help your pet live a longer and healthier life.

How Often Should I Examine My Dog?

Now that we have discussed the importance of conducting an at-home assessment for your dog and the signs to be on the lookout for, it is important to form a routine. 
 
At-home health checkups are best done on a monthly basis. If your dog is on the older side, you can increase the frequency of the checkups. Regular checks can even be incorporated into your pet’s daily routine like grooming. Keep a note of your observations every month so you can track your dog’s health journey.
 
Remember, this checkup is in no way a replacement for regular vet checkups. It is simply to help you identify any changes that your dog may be going through. Your pet needs to visit a veterinarian for a thorough full-body checkup at least once a year.
 
It goes without saying that if you notice any of the problems listed above, consult with your veterinarian immediately and make lifestyle changes as needed.

01. Meat & Vegetable Stew

This is the best case scenario, when you have fresh greens and meat available.

Ingredients:

• Chicken, Mutton, Fish or any other meat that you can find
• Green Beans
• Pumpkin
• Sweet Potato or Potato
• Rice
• Coconut Oil, or any available vegetable oil
• Turmeric Powder

Recipe:

• Clean and chop all the vegetables (green beans, pumpkin, sweet potato) into small dices.
• Cut the meat into small pieces too. Use boneless meat, as far as possible. Otherwise, debone after cooking.
• Add all the ingredients to a pot with water.
• Cook on medium-low heat for about 30 minutes.
• Refrigerate in a clean container for future use. Serve warm as per your pet’s mealtime.

DO NOT feed cooked bones to your pet. They can be a potential choking hazard and may cause internal injury.

02. Egg Pasta

This is a fallback option, when availability of ingredients is limited.

Ingredients:

• Whole Eggs
• Sprouts
• Pumpkin
• Potato
• Pasta of choice (or Rice, if pasta is unavailable)
• Coconut Oil, or any available vegetable oil
• Turmeric Powder

Recipe:

• Cook pasta with sprouts, pumpkin, potato, oil, and turmeric (do not add salt).
• Refrigerate the pasta mix for future meals (always serve warm).
• Add whole hard-boiled eggs before serving.

Avoid feeding raw eggs at this point, or feeding only egg whites. These may have dire consequences on your pet.

03. Soya Khichadi (not suitable for Cats)

This should be your worst-case option, when the ingredients are only sparsely available.

Ingredients:

• Soya Nuggets
• Lentil (Dal) of choice
• Rice
• Pumpkin, Potato or other available vegetables
• Curd
• Turmeric Powder

Recipe:

• Boil dal and rice with soya nuggets, potato, and turmeric.
• Refrigerate the mix in clean containers for future meals.
• Add curd before serving. Serve meals warm.

When situation worsens, you may be tempted to feed Rotis or Chapatis to your pet. While it is acceptable to feed them during a crisis, Rotis are not suitable for your dog or cat.

Among the worst hit by lockdowns are stray animals. As you lay in your bed, comfortably cuddled with your family and pets, carefree about your meals because you stocked up well, the animals on the street roam in search of food and water.
 
With fewer restaurants open and less food waste being generated, strays do not have much to survive on. In order for us to successfully coexist, it is extremely important for those at privilege (us) to lend a helping hand to those in need (strays). Here is how you can care for strays during a lockdown while still not violating any regulations.

Why Stray Animals Must be Fed

Food and Water form the basis of survival for any living being. Dogs, since their evolution, have depended on humans for their food needs. This sharing has been the basis of a peaceful, caring relationship between dogs and humans. Today, food waste from restaurants, eateries, and even households feeds a majority of stray animals. Keeping the deal our ancestors made, it is upon us to provide access to food and water to the stray animals even in the time of a lockdown.
 
Dog feeders often it upon themselves to feed food to the strays in their locality on a regular basis. These animals, in the long run, become totally dependent on the feeders for their meals as their innate scavenging instinct starts fizzing away. The restrictions on movement that lockdowns bring about also limit the activities of dog feeders massively, affecting the stray animal population dependent on them.
 
Without sufficient food or water, these animals may eventually starve and perish. The scarcity of food may even result in unnecessary aggression in animals. Those that lose the fight to hunger may die, and their decaying bodies may pose another bigger health risk to human and animal populations alike.
 

 

How to Care for Stray Animals during Lockdown

The best way to look after the strays in your area during a lockdown is to leave out a bowl of food and clean drinking water outside your door (or society gate) every day. You need not go out of your way and travel to feed dogs or feed a multitude of them. Just leaving clean food and water at your door for those in need, does your share.
 
In order for this practice to have a bigger impact, communicate the same to your neighbors, and others in your society. If each person leaves out food enough to feed even one stray; as a community activity, a lot of dogs can be fed.
 
Doing this also does not break any laws, as you do not need to travel or go out of your way to feed multiple dogs near and far. Know that the restrictions applied by governments during lockdowns are usually with the best interest of its citizens in mind. Breaking the law only puts you, your family, and the community at risk. One must do their best in keeping up with what the law permits.
 
As per the latest updates, 50 dog feeders per district are being provided with feeder passes by their respective district DCPs to function during a lockdown in Delhi. Feeders can visit the office of their district DCP and request for a pass.
 

 

What to Feed the Stray Animals during the Lockdown

You need not cook anything special either, just a portion of your meals works fine. If you feel like you are up to feeding the dogs something more suitable for them you can also boil some boneless chicken and rice, with some turmeric in a cooker, and serve it to the dogs. This can also be made in bulk and refrigerated so you do not have to cook daily.

If you’re looking for a simpler solution, you can feed boiled eggs, soya nuggets or even biscuits or rotis as the last resort.
 
Apart from this, you can even leave vegetable & fruits for the cows and other stray cattle. Grass or other suitable waste from the garden or the kitchen also work as a great option for the herbivorous animals.
 

Donate for the Welfare of Animals during Lockdown

If you happen to be financially privileged, consider making a donation to an NGO or feeder around that is helping stray animals during the lockdown. You could also make a donation to your state’s CM Relief Fund if your state happens to be considerate about the welfare of animals and is taking efforts for their well-being during such conditions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as one of the worst global crisis in recent history. The rate at which the situation is escalating and the measures that the public administrations have to resolve to are hidden from none.
 
In line with the general health advisory of the Govt of India, DawgieBowl decided to suspend its services w.e.f. March 24th, 2020. As soon as the announcement was made, we were swamped with calls and messages from concerned patrons. We would like to assure everyone that we share their distress, and are working on getting our supply-chain functional at the earliest.

It was neither an impulsive nor an easy decision. It came about after a thorough analysis of the prevalent situation:
 
A nationwide curfew has been enforced from midnight on March 24th. Even though Animal Fodder has been listed as an Essential Service vide Ministry of Home Affairs’ Order No. 40-3/2020-D dated 24-03-2020, there’s still a lot of confusion and uncertainty with the ground staff.
 
The police in Noida and Delhi are providing e-passes for movement during the curfew but our application, like many others, is pending review. Until the passes are awarded, it’s impossible for our staff to travel to work, source raw materials, or deliver finished goods to our customers.
 
It is still unclear if these e-passes will allow us to operate in the Industrial Area. The Noida Authority is yet to issue advisory on the functioning of essential services and their auxiliary industries. All manufacturing units, including ours, have been forced shut under the threat of penalties and punishment.
 
Some of our ingredients are sourced from other states. We are not sure yet how that will pan out. Our delivery partner, FedEx has also suspended services in the wake of the lockdown. Without their support, our outstation deliveries stay impacted. As of now, everyone is in a state of widespread panic and confusion; and no clear answers are available yet.
 
Frequent power cuts act as another deterrent to our process. Since the power loads in Industrial Areas have reduced, the power corporation is redirecting the energy to residential areas that are currently on peak demand. Our process is completely dependent on electricity. An unplanned power cut could result in the loss of valuable process time or even perish of the finished product.
 
Apart from all these, the health and safety of our staff, their families and the community at large still stay our top concern.
 
That said, we’re working tirelessly to secure necessary clearances and permits from all concerned authorities and hope to resume our operations at the earliest.
 
We are working with our vendors to arrange supplies of essential raw material from other states. We are also in talks with logistic providers to resume the nationwide delivery of our product. But we expect some delay before these are sorted out.
 
We are procuring necessary personal protective equipment, and have already purchased due insurance plans to protect our staff members and their families from COVID-19.
 
Our marketing team is working hard to generate literature that will help pet parents around the world through the next few weeks, especially in the unfortunate circumstances of quarantine or hospitalization.
 
Our subscription customers have surplus food supplies to last for the next couple of weeks. And we hope to get back to work before that stock runs out. But in the event that fails to happen, our team is working on a set of backup options for our customers too. Please be assured, we will not let your pets suffer.
 
We are facing one of the biggest healthcare emergencies the world has ever faced. But we will overcome this, together.

We must make the necessary arrangements for the safety of everyone in our family – including our pets. Until this was published, there have only been two cases of dogs that were tested positive for the Coronavirus in Hong Kong. The WHO, however, stands by its statement that pets like dogs and cats cannot be affected by or transmit the Coronavirus.

But what happens to your pet in case you are infected, and quarantined or hospitalized?

While we are all hoping for the best, and being optimistic – one must be prepared for the worst, or even the slightly bad. When China went into lockdown, the country saw an epidemic of abandoned pets. So many, that the shelters could barely manage to accommodate them all. In India, cases of pets being deserted after parents were quarantined have started surfacing already.

Step 1: PICK A CHAMPION

A Champion is a person you appoint to look after your pet’s needs when you aren’t available. The Champion can foster your pet, feed them, walk them, and take care of their basic needs until you are back. Given the unpredictability of the situation, it is advisable to have one primary Champion and a couple of more for backup.
 

5 Qualities of an Ideal Champion for your Pet

1. Is someone you trust
2. Is a pet parent, or loves pets and is comfortable looking after them
3. Lives in your neighborhood (ideally your neighbor)
4. Has the capacity to accommodate your pet and their needs for a minimum of 14 days or more
5. Shares a healthy relationship with your pet

Make a list of potential champions and contact them to see if they’d be willing to help you out. Be honest with them about your pet’s basics, special needs, medical conditions, behavior, and quirks. Know that lying or hiding anything at this point defies the purpose of the whole activity – the well-being of your pet.
 
Let your pet spend some time with the Champion so they get comfortable around them and are not anxious. Have the Champion offer them treats and pet them. Allow them to play games, and even learn basic obedience at the Champion’s command. This will help the two out immensely if they have to spend long durations of time together in the future.
 

Step 2: PACK AN EMERGENCY KIT

Your pet’s emergency kit is at the heart of their well-being during the trying times. Think of it as a survival kit. Use a case, bag, backpack, box or any other container that can hold all the items in and is easy to carry. Visibly label this bag with your pet’s name (eg: Bruno’s Emergency Kit). Keep the kit in an easily accessible place and inform the Champion(s) about its location. You could also just leave the kit at the Champion’s place to reduce last minute hustle.
 
Your Pet’s Emergency Kit must contain the following:

1. Food & Bowls
   Pack non-perishable food for about 14 days or pack a few meals’ worth and give your Champion the information about your pet’s food so they could buy it later. Given that there may be a shortage of packaged pet foods in the market, list down a few food items that your dog or cat likes to eat. This would enable the Champion to arrange food for them, no matter what.
2. Medicines & Drugs
   If your pet suffers from a medical condition and requires administration of medicines or drugs, keep these in the kit too. Don’t forget to include a copy of the prescription and a note on how and when the medicines are to be given.
3. Important Documents
   Keep a copy of adoption documents, vaccination and medical records in the kit. The stress of such a situation can have traumatic effects on your pet. These documents will help the Champion know them in depth and take appropriate measures when necessary.
4. Collar & Leash
   A spare collar and leash that suits your pet can be extremely useful. Also ensure that your pet is wearing a collar ID at all times that contains correct and updated contact information. If possible, get a spare ID that contains more information than usual – your pet’s name, your name, contact number(s), locality, rabies vaccination and sterilization information. If you suspect yourself going into quarantine or being hospitalized, attach this ID to your pet’s collar.
5. Familiar Items
   Items your pet is familiar with, like toys, a blanket, food bowls, etc. will help reduce their anxiety and help them adjust easier. Toys that provide some mental stimulation like puzzles, games, etc. will prove useful to keep your pet stimulated in times when they could miss out on walks and other physical activity.

Please advise the Champion to follow all safety precautions while handling your pet’s emergency kit. The items in the kit may act as fomite and carry the virus along. Due sanitization is recommended before taking the kit or other belongings into their house.

Step 3: PREPARE YOUR PET

How well your action plan works in reality is going to depend a lot on your pet! However committed your Champion be, things are going to get really difficult if your pet just does not want to cooperate! Use the time during the lockdown to work on your pet so that the process is easier on them.

1. Basic Grooming & Hygiene
   Spend a day treating your pet to an all-round clean up! Start with brushing their teeth and trimming overgrown nails. Look for any ticks or fleas while giving them a nice full-body rub. Brush their coat and give them a bath (clean crevices and corners carefully and thoroughly). Maintaining basic hygiene with your pet becomes even more essential in times like these.
2. Mental Stimulation & Anxiety Reduction
   While you two are spending most of your time indoors, indulge in some mind bending activities. Play puzzles, treasure hunts with treats, some scent play. Of course, these do not substitute physical activity, and you should also play physically exerting games. Mental games help alleviate stress and anxiety.
    
   If your pet gets severely anxious without you around, try finding solutions to this behavior. Explore essential oils that may work to calm them, or music that soothes them.
    
   Include your Champion in this step, if possible. The more time your pet spends with the Champion, the more comfortable they both will be with each other.

3. Toilet Training
   If you parent an adult dog, chances are they are trained to do their business outdoors. However in a case of a complete lockdown this may or may not be possible. Start training your pet to relieve themselves indoors.

Managing Your Pet’s Basic Needs during Lockdown

As with other members of your family, food, sanitation, and medicine make up the most important part of your pet’s necessities.
 

Food

We hope you’ve stocked up your pet’s food for at least a few weeks. If not, it may still not be too late to make a trip to the nearest pet store or call your pet food provider.
 
However, it’s likely that limited supplies like pet food may eventually run out. When that happens, you can easily cook up some simple meals for your pet at home. Try to keep them as balanced as possible, but don’t let the scarcity of ingredients pull you down. While your dawgie can make do with a vegetarian meal or two, try keeping your cat’s diet meat-based. Your pets can eat mostly everything you can, and as long as you’re able to put something on the plate for yourself, you should be able to set a bowl up for your pet too.

Since your pet will mostly be staying home with you, their activity levels are sure to be reduced. That can leave them with smaller appetites. So make adjustments to their portion size accordingly. You don’t want to overfeed them!
 
The same goes for treats. We know how binging on some junk can instantly make you feel better. It’s natural to think that the same would work for your pet. However, please moderate the number of treats you feed your pet in a day. You don’t want to come out of this with an obese, or worse, a sick pet.
 

Toilet

If your dog is used to relieving themselves outdoors, you should be able to take them out alone for a small potty-stroll twice a day. Remember to keep this walk as short as possible – ideally within your yard, garden or terrace – otherwise outside and around your house. Pick up after your pet and dispose of the poop properly in order to not cause trouble to others. This is in the best interest of your pet.
 
If they poop more than twice a day, or you cannot take them out, toilet-train them for potty pads indoors. They may take some time to adjust to these, but start the training as soon as possible.

Medication & Veterinary Care

Pharmacies are open usually during lockdown. However, situations can often get unpredictable. In case your pet takes any medication on a regular basis, stock them for at least a month at the first chance you get.
 
Even if your pet is not on any medicine in general, locate a chemist that stocks veterinary medicine and a veterinarian around you that is open during the lockdown and take their contact numbers. This is to ensure that if your pet faces any emergency health issues, you will have access to a vet and medicines.
 
That said, be mindful of using these resources wisely. Avoid vet visits unless you have a genuine emergency. Venturing out for trivial reasons not only stresses out the already scarce resources, but also increases the risk of community infection of COVID-19.
 

Managing Your Pet’s Exercise & Activity during Lockdown

As incredible as it sounds, staying home all day could be stressful for the body and mind – for both, you and your pet. Managing some amount of physical exercise or activity in a day could have therapeutic effects.
 

Walks

Walks are indeed the most exciting part of a dog’s day. As sad as it may be, lockdowns will affect your dawgie’s walk routine. While short potty walks can still be managed, try not to take your pet for longer walks for the safety of yourself, your family and the community at large.

It is obvious to worry about our companion animals in the event of this outbreak. Is your pet at risk or puts you at risk of the deadly disease? Let’s find out!
 
Here’s everything you must know about COVID-19 to ensure safety for you & your pets.

What are Coronaviruses?

The Coronaviridae family gets its name, in part, because the virus surface is surrounded by a ring of projecting proteins that appear like a solar corona when viewed through an electron microscope. (Source: AVMA)
 
They are a large group of viruses that originate in animals. Some of them are zoonotic in nature, meaning that they can transmit to humans. They cause a range of upper-respiratory-tract illnesses – some as common as flu, while some others are as severe as pneumonia. These viruses are contagious and spread among persons on direct contact. However, they are usually not easily communicable across species.

Coronaviruses in Dogs and Cats

Coronaviruses originate in animals, it is natural that they affect animals too. Pet animals, such as dogs and cats are prone to certain types of coronaviruses too. Dogs can contract an Alpha type Coronavirus called CCoV (Canine Coronavirus) and FIPV-FIP (Feline Coronavirus) is the type of Coronavirus known to affect cats. Both of these have vaccinations available.
 
NOTE: Canine and Feline Coronavirus are not the same as the current COVID-19 causing SARS-CoV-2
 

The Wuhan Coronavirus or COVID-19

COVID-19 was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital city of China’s Hubei province. The origin of the virus is still being debated, but current belief is that the SARS-CoV-2 originated in Wuhan’s Huanan Seafood Market. Since then it has spread across China and all around the world through travelers. Until the last update to this article (April 24, 2020), there were 2,737,866 reported cases of COVID-19 infection. Even though experts initially believed that this virus had a low mortality rate of about 3.40%, the outbreak has led to 191,423 deaths so far (6.99%), while 752,284 people have successfully recovered.

COVID-19 and Pet Dogs & Cats

Statements from authorities regarding COVID-19 and pets:

WHO: “At present, there is no evidence that companion animals or pets such as dogs and cats can be infected with the new coronavirus”
AVMA: “There is no evidence to suggest that animals, including pets, that may be incidentally infected by humans are playing a role in the spread of COVID-19”
MoHFW, India: “…to date, there is no evidence that a dog, cat or any pet can
transmit COVID-19”

At the present time, the only confirmed cases of COVID-19 in dogs and cats globally are two pet dogs and a cat in Hong Kong, and two pet cats in the United States. A pet cat in Belgium was also tested positive, but very few details about the case are available.
 
The two cats that have tested positive in the US lived in different areas of New York. They both had mild respiratory illness and are expected to make a full recovery. In one of the cases, the owner of the cat was COVID positive before the cat was diagnosed, leading to the assumption that the cat received the virus from its owner. There was another cat in the same household who has tested negative. However in case of the other cat, no members in the family have tested positive for COVID-19 yet and it is believed that the cat may have contracted the virus from an asymptomatic neighbor.
 
The Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) in Belgium reported a cat that tested positive for COVID-19. Specific details about this case are unavailable, but the cat has since recovered.
 
The Hong Kong government has been quarantining the pets of every person hospitalized for COVID-19 for 14 days right from the beginning. Until 15th April 2020, 30 dogs, 17 cats and 2 hamsters have been quarantined at the AFCD facility. Only 2 dogs and 1 cat out of these have tested positive. These pets showed mild to moderate symptoms of respiratory disease. Both the dogs were recovered and released. Sadly, one of the them passed away three days after being released. “The dog was 17 years old and had ongoing health issues that were likely responsible for the death of this dog, rather than COVID-19 – AVMA”
 
These cases have provided us some insight into the nature of the disease and how it can affect our pet dogs and cats. It is good to note that all the pets had mild symptoms and they are all expected to recover completely and safely. It can also be seen that the pets with a COVID positive family member contracted the virus from them, but the pets haven’t infected other family members or pets* as per current knowledge.
 
* information available about COVID-19 and pets is inconclusive and only assumptive as the number of pets affected is too low to draw any conclusions. Also note, that all information is very dynamic.
 
The nascent nature of this disease, however, leaves out a lot of questions unanswered. Like, can dogs and cats infect other pets, can they infect humans around them, can they be asymptomatic? While answering these questions may take some time, it is advisable to start taking precautionary measures to keep your pet safe.
 

Can Dogs and Cats spread Coronavirus?

COVID-19 does not spread across species according to the current information. Which means your dog or cat cannot infect you directly. As per the US Center for Disease Control, the virus seems to have emerged from an animal source but is now spreading from person to person.
 
That being said, can pets act as formites for secondary transmission of COVID-19? Probably, but the risk is very low. From current studies, we know that the SARS-CoV-2 does not like rough or uneven surfaces, like your pet’s fur. However, smoother surfaces like your pet’s nose, paws, etc. may carry the virus if they come in direct contact with an infected patient. Even then, fomite surfaces may only be a secondary mode of transmission, droplets being the primary one. But the risk cannot be outruled completely.
 
Know that this is only based on information available at the moment, and could change if new discoveries are made. This does not mean pet parents need to be in a state of panic or guilt. Just keep yourself updated with the latest news about COVID-19 and follow basic safety precautions and hygiene practices.
 

 

Keeping Your Pets and Yourself Safe from COVID-19

The emerging cases of COVID-19 in pets do give rise to doubts. While there is no confirmed risk, it is only in the best interest of you, your family, pets and the society at large. Following are some of the steps you must incorporate in your daily routine.

1. Keep pets indoors
   Staying home is the best one can do at the moment, and this applies to your pet too. Keep them indoors as much as possible. If walks are absolutely necessary, keep them short. Avoid going to dog parks or public places for walks. Follow all Social Distancing practices on these trips. Do not encourage your pet to interact with people from outside the household, and clean up after you come home.
    
   Note: If your pet is an indoor-outdoor pet like a cat, it is advisable to switch them to being entirely indoors for their and your safety.
2. Wash your hands frequently
   Use soap and water to wash your hands frequently, especially after you’ve offered some belly rubs to your pet or stray dogs. Do the same before you use your hands to consume food. Washing your hands thoroughly and frequently will eliminate the virus if it’s on your hands.
3. Cover mouth and nose while coughing & sneezing
   Symptoms of COVID-19 include a cold, cough, fever and difficulty breathing. Protect others around you, and your pets from contracting anything off you by practicing basic respiratory hygiene. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, cloth or at least your own hands when coughing or sneezing. Try staying indoors until you recover, if you can.
4. Do not touch eyes, nose, and mouth often
   We touch a lot of things and surfaces throughout the day. Touching your eyes, nose and mouth often can transfer any virus you may have on your hands. Do not let your pet lick you before you wash properly.
5. Avoid raw or undercooked meats and poultry in the diet
   Avoid consuming meat or eggs from eateries, cook them yourself. Only eat meat, poultry, or fish that is completely cooked and not undercooked or raw.

There is no evidence yet that confirms the spread of the coronavirus through the consumption of meat, poultry or fish. However, take basic precautions to avoid risk to yourself or your loved ones. Get your meats from a traceable and trustworthy source; especially if you feed your pet a raw diet. If you cook at home, ensure that the meats and eggs are properly cooked. Avoid packaged or processed foods or treats in your pet’s diet.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is an endocrine disease caused by a defect or malfunction in the body’s sugar metabolism leading to blood sugar levels that are higher than normal (Hyperglycemia). Hence, in order to understand Diabetes, it is essential to understand Sugar Metabolism first.
 

Basics of Sugar Metabolism

The food we, or in this case, our pets consume goes into their body to be broken down by the stomach and intestines into three basic components: Proteins, Fats, and Sugars. These components then get absorbed into the bloodstream and are carried to the liver.
 
Sugar or Glucose is the body’s main fuel or energy source. It is also the only fuel the brain uses to function. Glucose can be obtained through food, and some is naturally produced in the body. A spike or drop in Glucose can affect the functioning of the brain and body.
 
High levels of blood sugar are toxic to multiple organs of the body, nerves and blood vessels. In the case of low blood sugar, on the other hand, the body starts breaking down fats. Fats aren’t as efficient a fuel as glucose and make the blood too acidic, leading to illness. The presence of Ketones in the urine helps identify low blood sugar.
 
When the Glucose levels in the blood rise, Insulin is released by the pancreas. Insulin helps in the regulation of sugar levels in the body. It acts as the gatekeeper in the process of glucose entering the cells and being used as the prime source of energy.
 

The graph above shows how the Glucose level in the body rises after eating. The levels lower again in about 2 hours after Insulin takes effect. Showing Insulin’s main function; maintaining blood sugar at 80 to 100 mg/ml.
 
In pets with Diabetes, the blood sugar spike after meals is very steep as compared to non-diabetic pets. The levels also stay high longer in diabetic pets. Such irregularities can also be observed in pre-diabetic pets.
 

The bodies of dogs and cats try to keep the blood sugar level under 130 mg/ml. When this level rises beyond 180 mg/ml (renal threshold), Glucose spills into the urine. In the urine, Glucose attracts water hence diluting it. This results in the classic diabetes symptom of frequent urination. This water attraction also leads to water loss in the pets’ body leading to excessive thirst.
 

Types of Diabetes

There are two types of Diabetes observed in pets:

1. Diabetes Mellitus or Type 1 Diabetes is common among dogs. It is caused by a failure in Insulin production in the Pancreas. When Insulin isn’t produced in the body Glucose builds up in the blood but cannot be converted into energy for the cells. Dogs that have Cushing’s’ Disease, or Pancreatitis are predisposed to Diabetes Mellitus. Pets with Type 1 Diabetes require Insulin administration. They may also develop cataract or Urinary Tract Infections. Unfortunately, Type 1 Diabetes is not reversible.
2. Diabetes Insipidus or Type 2 Diabetes affects more cats than dogs. It occurs when the pancreas produces sufficient insulin but the body’s cells do not respond to it (insulin-resistant). Obesity and certain medications can cause Type 2 Diabetes. With certain lifestyle changes in the pet’s diet and exercise, Diabetes Insipidus can be reversed.

Causes of Diabetes

Diabetes can be caused by one or multiple triggers – some specific, some vague. The following could also be considered risk factors that lead to diabetes. So if your pet hasn’t be diagnosed with diabetes yet, but any of the below applies to them, you must start being more vigilant.
 

Lifestyle & Diet

Obesity is the onset of the doom you’ve bought over your pet’s health; including Diabetes. Pets that are overfed and underexercised retain positive unused energy that leads to weight gain. Obese dogs and cats are prone to Type 2 Diabetes.

If your pet has been feeding on only commercial packaged processed pet foods (kibble) for all their life, Diabetes shouldn’t come as a surprise. Kibble is stuffed with excessive carbohydrates that your pet’s body does not need. It leads to Diabetes, among other health issues in your pets adult and old days.
 
GMO food items like Soy or Corn contain toxins that can damage your pet’s body over long periods of consumption. 95% of Corn and Soy are genetically engineered. Your pet is consuming these toxins for every meal if you feed them kibble.
 

 

Pancreatic Issues

Diabetes is a malfunction in Insulin production or absorption. Insulin in the body is made in the Pancreas, directly linking pancreatic issues to Insulin production and hence Diabetes. Inflammation of the Pancreas or Pancreatitis is a common pancreatic issue in pets that leads to alteration in Insulin production. Its causes, however, link back to the pet’s lifestyle, obesity and inappropriate dietary habits.
 
Pancreatic Cancer is rare in pets; but if your pet suffers from it, they could also be diabetic. Pancreatic Cancer begins with symptoms just like Pancreatitis. There are three main types of cancer of the pancreas; pancreatic adenocarcinomas, gastrinomas, and insulinomas. As the name suggests, insulinoma affects insulin production the most. Pets suffering from Insulinomas produce excessively high amounts of insulin leading to a drop in blood sugar levels leading to Hypoglycemia. More on that below.
 

Autoimmunity

Autoimmunity is a state where the body destroys its own cells. When the insulin-producing Beta cells in the Pancreas are destroyed, insulin production is affecting leading to Diabetes. Most cases of Diabetes in Pets are thought to be stemming from Autoimmune Issues. Autoimmunity can have multiple triggers.
 
Certain Chemicals & Hormones in the body and their synthetic administration can antagonize Insulin. Like Cortisone, shots of which are used in the treatment for arthritis, but as a side-effect can result in higher blood glucose levels and a weaker immune system. Your vet will ideally refrain from giving Cortisone shots to your arthritic pet if they are also diabetic. Even sex hormones like Estrogen & Progesterone affect Insulin levels in the body. Medication for Cushing’s Disease and even Cystic Ovaries can hence cause diabetes in pets. Your vet may even ask you to sterilize your intact pet if they are diagnosed with diabetes.

Vaccinosis or over-vaccination can lead to a build-up of insulin antagonizing hormones in the body. It is very important to vaccinate your pet only as much as they need. Educate yourself about how long the effect of a vaccine lasts in your pet’s body. Some vaccines given in puppy/ kittenhood do not need administration for the rest of your pet’s life.

Genetic Predisposition

Just like humans, our pets too can be genetically predisposed to Diabetes. Some breeds are more likely to be diabetic than others, it could also be hereditary. This, however, does not guarantee that your dog will be diabetic. It is only a disclaimer for you to be more cautious and vigilant with their upbringing and care. Among dog breeds common to Indian households, Pugs, Beagles, Poodles, Dachshunds, and Golden Retrievers are prone to Diabetes.
 

 

Symptoms of Diabetes

Treating or controlling Diabetes in your dog or cat in its initial stages is extremely important in order to minimize the long term damage caused to their organs. Symptoms of diabetes can be identified if you observe your pet well. Other than this, annual veterinary check-ups should not be missed.
 

Early Signs & Symptoms of Diabetes

Increased Hunger & Weight Loss: Since your pet’s body is not converting glucose to usable energy, they may feel excessively hungry. On the other hand, their body will start burning fat reserves to provide for the energy requirement leading to weight loss.
 
Heavy Thirst & Frequent Urination: As mentioned above, when glucose overflows into the urine it bonds with water dehydrating your pet. This makes them thirstier. But since the body cannot retain the water, they may need to urinate often and even have ‘accidents’ at home.
 

Advanced Signs & Symptoms of Diabetes

If you have somehow managed to overlook these symptoms in your pet and haven’t started treatment for a while, the symptoms may become more advanced.
 
Weakness & Wobbly Gait: High Blood Sugar affects the conduction of electricity in the peripheral nerves. This and a lack of energy can lead to weakness and a wobbly gait (abnormality in walking).
 
Vomiting & Diarrhea: As the blood sugar levels stay at a sustained high and your pet’s body burns fats for fuel, their blood will eventually turn acidic. When this happens, your cat or dog will start feeling sick. Expect loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and extreme dehydration. If left untreated up to this point, your pet could die.
 

Effects of Diabetes

Cataracts: The lens in the eyes are kept clear through an active process that prevents any water from entering the lens fibers. But when the sugar level of the fluid in the eyes is high, it seeps into the lens and attracts water to it. This water turns crystalline white, known as a Cataract. Cataracts are opaque and do not allow any light to hit the eye’s retina, thus leading to partial or complete blindness. Fortunately, cataracts in most pets can be surgically removed.
 
Enlarged Liver: Diabetic pets may suffer from fat accumulation inside the liver. This can lead to inflammation and even enlargement of the liver itself. Glycogen accumulation in the liver occurs in 80% of all diabetic dogs (Source) making an enlarged liver a common result of Diabetes.
 
UTIs: Glucosuria (glucose in the urine) due to diabetes in dogs and cats increases the risks of contracting UTIs.
 
Kidney Failure: When left undiagnosed for a long period of time, diabetes can lead to chronic kidney failure in dogs and cats. Since diabetes is mostly diagnosed in middle-aged to older dogs and cats, the wear and tear of the kidney tissues over time, coupled with the stress due to excessive Glucosuria urine can lead to a chronic renal (kidney) failure.
 
Ketoacidosis: In cases of advanced Diabetes, a complication called Diabetes Ketoacidosis (DKA) occurs. It stems from Cell Starvation that occurs due to a lack of insulin as cell food. The burning of fat reserves from the body generates Ketones for its energy needs, however, Ketones are toxic. DKA can go from usual diabetes symptoms accompanied by urinary clumps, dry and flaky skin and coat, and sweet breath to jaundice, seizures, coma and even death.
 
Coma: Coma or Comatose is when your dog or cat is unresponsive with regular breath and heartbeat. It is a medical emergency that is commonly resultant of undiagnosed Diabetes.
 
Death: Diabetes needs diagnosis and treatment. If that does not happen, the eventual loss of appetite, diarrhea, and dehydration could lead to your pet’s death.
 

 

Treatment of Diabetes

The blood sugar levels in non-diabetic pets are within the range of 80 to 130 mg/ml. The goal of Diabetes treatment is to try to maintain the abnormally high levels anywhere between 100 to 200 mg/ml for most of the day. Diabetes treatment and control is a long-term process. Especially if your pet has been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, they will undergo treatment for the rest of their life.
 
Initial treatment for dogs and cats with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes is the same. The goal remains to manage the pet’s weight along with an appropriate diet and exercise. If your vet is intact this may also be the right time to get them sterilized.
 
The initial months need to be spent on establishing a set schedule for your pet’s day. From food, to exercise, to sleep. In cases of Type 1 Diabetes, your vet may spend this time determining the right amount of and frequency of Insulin your pet needs to be administered.
 

Diet for Diabetic Dogs & Cats

The age-old saying ‘you become what you eat’ stands true for our pets too. Pet food through the ages has been a very lightly taken aspect of pet-keeping. Most of us blindly feed our pets, the dog or cat food packaged and marketed most convincingly, paying very little heed to what actually goes into the food. A lot of diseases we see coming up in pets today are all because of this ignorance through the years.
 
Loading Carbohydrates in an unconvincing and totally unnecessary amount is a common phenomenon across commercial dog food and cat food brands today. These excessive carbs as a part of your pet’s daily diet lead to unhealthy weight gain and obesity over time. Which eventually sets the ground for development of Diabetes.

The initial steps your veterinarian will suggest when you begin your pet’s treatment will involve changes to their diet. The ideal diet for diabetic dogs and cats is one that is low on carbohydrates, as low as 7% or even less for cats. Making the diet high in fiber too can slow the rise of blood sugar levels in your pet’s body.
 
While choosing diabetic pet food, keep away from feeding your pet any more processed commercial food. Maintaining a routine for your pet is key in controlling diabetes and its effects on your pet. Feed your pet two measured, healthy meals a day at determined times. Set timings for their exercise too. Have clean, safe drinking water available 24×7.
 

 

Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia occurs when the blood sugar levels drop to 50 mg/ml or lower. Its symptoms include weakness, disorientation, unusual vocalizations, excessive sleeping, or even seizures. If your pet shows the above symptoms, they are hypoglycemic. Hypoglycemia could occur after you’ve administered a high or more than prescribed dose of Insulin, or your pet hadn’t eaten before you gave them the Insulin shot.
 
When this does occur, apply some Sweet Corn Syrup to your pet’s gums, tongue and mouth. The syrup enters the body through the mucous membrane in your pet’s mouth and starts working on raising the blood sugar levels immediately. Once your pet is responsive, feed them some soft food.
 
Contact your veterinarian before you give your pet the next insulin shot. Tell them of the incident. You could be giving your pet an incorrect dosage of insulin that needs alternation.
 
If your pet isn’t responsive until 10 minutes after you’ve applied the Sweet Corn Syrup, rush to your veterinarian immediately.

As daunting as Diabetes sounds, it is not a death sentence for your dog or cat. With the right care and treatment, Type 2 Diabetes can be reversed, and Type 1 be controlled. Through this time be patient with your pet and give them all the attention you can. It will be stressful, it will demand more from you than you are used to. But at the end of the day, anything done for your pet is rewarding in multitudes.

What is Cancer?

A body is made up of trillions of cells, the building blocks of all tissues. Each cell is designated to perform a specific task in the body. For example, bone and muscle cells give strength and structure to the body while organ cells make up the different body organs. And skin cells protect them from the external environment. You can think of these cells as different employees of the company, each part of different teams designated to perform specific functions – HR, Engineering, Marketing & Sales, etc.
 
Cells are capable of reproducing or replicating themselves according to their functional requirements. This replication is called Growth. The Sales team and HR, may both grow at different rates, specific to their function. The DNA information stored in the nucleus of the cell decides how each cell grows and performs. Every cell is expected to work as per the rules defined in the DNA.
 
Sometimes this information undergoes an unexpected corruption or typo. This mutation causes certain cells to grow out of order. These outlaw cells create tumors and tend to grow and spread across the body. Much like Radical Groups or Unions within a company, they perform no real function except for defying rules created by the management and disrupting normal business. This is known as Cancer.
 
Typically, the body’s immune system would identify and fix these cancerous cells. But in the absence of a healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition, the body’s natural defenses against such outbursts are weakened. And hence, cancer thrives in the body. Much like most radical groups, cancers have the tendency to exploit the body’s resources to support the rapid growth of its corrupt cells and finally consume the host body completely. Research on Pet Cancer

A lot may not be available on Pet Cancer for two major reasons. One, most of the research and study around Pet Cancer has only been recent. Two, there has been a natural spike in the frequency of lifestyle diseases for both humans and pets in the past two decades. Thus, Cancer is a relatively new phenomenon for medical science, even more so for veterinary science.
 
The WHO has found a clear link between cases of cancer and poor lifestyle. One of the biggest contributors to this spike is food. Commercial, processed pet-foods, laden with preservatives and nutritionally insignificant substances have been under the light for it. We don’t eat the same quality of food today that we used to, 15 or 20 years ago. And neither do our pets. We don’t walk or run the same distance today that we used to, 15 or 20 years ago. And neither do our pets. Something as common as obesity increases the risks of up to 11 cancers.

We also never saw as many new breeds as commonly as we see today. Needless to say, the puppy mills are not really run by experts. Incessant breeding & inbreeding, coupled with lack of mother’s milk for the puppy has resulted in even more disorders. Once considered a disease of the old age, caused due to damage in DNA over years, Cancer has begun manifesting in puppies as young as 18 months of age now. Out of all companion animals, dogs are affected by more forms of cancer. Humans and dogs get cancer at approximately the same rate, while cats get fewer cancers. About 100 types of cancers have been identified in pet animals. Out of which cancer of the mammary gland and lymphoma are most common in dogs, and lymphoma/leukemia in cats. Causes of Cancer in Dogs and Cats

Just like in humans, there is no clear culprit for cancer in dogs or cats. Cancer is a complex disease and the definite reason for its occurrence in pets is still a mystery. However, there are a few reasons that could contribute to the development of different types of tumors in dogs or cats.
 

Genetics or Family History

Some dog breeds are more susceptible than others to developing a tumor, that said, all dogs are at a risk of cancer. A history of cancer in the pet’s lineage puts it directly at risk for the same. Large dog breeds like Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Labradors, Boxers and Great Danes are at maximum risk. The reason for which is still unknown, but certain genetics in these breeds make them more likely to have cancer than others. Pets with a white or light coat are also at a higher risk due to excess and unfiltered exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
 
Studies show the rate of cancer in female dogs to be higher than that in male dogs. Given mammary gland (milk-producing gland) cancer is the most common type of cancer in dogs. Female dogs in a population where dogs are not spayed are at a higher risk of cancer. Timely neutering them can help prevent mammary cancer in dogs.

Age

While cancer has recently been detected in younger pets too, a majority of pets develop cancer when they are over 7-10 years of age. Veterinarian cancer specialists suspect that as the immune system grows weaker with age the pet’s ability to control a cancerous cell decreases. It is very likely that an older pet’s body will incorrectly divide a cell causing a mutation that its immune system would no longer be able to fight. The longer a pet lives, the more it is exposed to environmental risk factors like carcinogens and viruses affecting its DNA and RNA, causing cancer.

Environmental Elements and Human Interferance

Living in an urban setup with humans exposes our pets to a lot of elements their bodies were never made to cope with. Building material, smog and pollution, chemicals used in house-cleaning products, cosmetics, insecticides and pesticides etc. can contain carcinogens that lead to cancer.
 
Leading the domesticated life has also made dogs and cats completely dependent on humans for their well-being. The decisions you make as a pet parent impact your pet’s life in a very substantial manner. Second-hand tobacco smoke, food bowls that are not cleaned thoroughly and overall hygiene can also lead to the generation of cancerous cells in pets’ bodies.
 
Among the many landmark choices humans make for their pets, the most crucial one is their food. For years, pet food companies have been supplying bags full of by-products and toxins under the “premium” tag. This processed kibble has been laying the ground for the development of cancer in the later stages of life of pets. Offering very little to no nutritional value, these pet foods are laden with preservatives, flavoring and a lot of what should never make it to your child’s bowl. Not only they fail to deliver nutritionally, but they make your pets’ bodies work harder. Hence, wearing out their immune system sooner than it should.
 
A bad diet can only be worse for a pet when his body does not receive enough activity too. As humans get lazier to perform any physical activity, their pets do not receive enough exercise either. This destroys the two most important pillars in the well-being of a pet; nutrition and exercise. Under-exercised pets get obese and obesity is the warehouse of all lifestyle disorders including cancer.

Then there is the growing vaccine culture which is also considered a reason for cancer development. More vaccinations do not mean more protection. Period. Vaccinations for pets need to be just as much their bodies need. Over-vaccination can have adverse effects on the pet including cancer. There have been cases where cancers in dogs and cats have developed on the spot of vaccination.

Types of Pet Cancer

While there are over 100 types of identified pet cancers, almost 1/3^rd of all cancers are skin cancers. Out of these up to 20% are Mast Cell Tumors. Mast cell tumors are most commonly found on the skin, spleen, bone marrow and liver. Dogs develop cancer like humans and hence breast cancer, bone cancer, lymph cancer, gut cancer are common. Cancer in cats is half as common as dogs, but it is far more aggressive in nature. They are prone to lymphoma associated with the feline leukemia virus and oral cancer. Below are the most common types of cancers:
 

Skin Cancers in Pets

Commonly found in aging dogs, Skin Cancer tends to be lesser common in cats. Although when found in cats they are malignant in nature, while comparatively benign in dogs. While there are different types of skin cancers, the most common types include Melanoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Mast Cell Tumors.

Mammary Gland or Breast Cancers in Pets

Cancers in mammary glands of unspayed female dog and cats occur quite frequently. That said, male dogs and dogs spayed later in their lives are not entirely safe from it either. The mammary glands produce milk to provide for newborn puppies. They are located in two rows extending from the chest to lower abdominal area of dogs and cats. Mammary cancer that is malignant in nature is more common in cats than in dogs. Though the condition is most likely to occur in female pets, there are rare but noted incidences of male pets developing a mammary gland cancer.

Brain Tumors in Pets

Unfortunately, brain cancer is very common among older pets over 5 years of age, more so in dogs than cats. But they vary in their degree and malignancy and most can be treated effectively. Breeds susceptible to developing a brain tumor include Boxers, Boston Terriers, and Golden Retrievers. Brain Tumors can be classified into two categories. Primary Brain Tumors, where cancer manifests in the brain cells and within its membrane itself. Meningioma, glioma, choroid plexus papilloma and pituitary adenoma or adenocarcinoma are primary brain tumors. Secondary Brain Tumors include types where cancer affects the brain as a result of spreading or metastasizing from another primary part of the body. These include hemangiosarcoma, mammary carcinoma, and melanoma.

Oral Tumors in Pets

Oral tumors in pets can be benign or malignant. A benign oral tumor is slow growing and does not spread to other parts. But a malignant oral tumor is rapid in growth and spreads to different areas of the body damaging them. Benign Oral Tumors include Peripheral Odontogenic Fibromas or POFs. These are formed in the periodontal ligament located in the tooth socket. Acantomatous Ameloblastoma is an aggressive benign tumor which does not spread to other parts of the body but is highly destructive locally. The most common types of Malignant Oral Tumors include Oral Melanoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Fibrous Sarcoma.

Lymphoma or Lymphosarcoma in Pets

Originating in the lymphoid tissues of the lymph nodes, bone marrow, and the spleen, Lymphoma or Lymphosarcoma is the most common types of cancer in dogs and cats. Environmental factors like pesticides, chemicals or residing in an industrialized urban setup may increase the chance of your pet developing Lymphoma.

Testicular Cancers in Dogs & Cats

The testicles or testis has several cell types any of which could turn cancerous. The germ cells, responsible for generating sperms when cancerous lead to Seminomas. The supporting and nourishing Sertoli cells may have Sertoli Cell Tumors. And the hormone-producing interstitial cells become Leydig or Interstitial Cell Tumors. Testicular Tumors are common in older male dogs that haven’t been castrated. More so, when the testicle(s) fail to descend to its natural position and stays stuck to the belly cavity.

Bone Cancers in Pets

While not as common in cats, bone cancer is usually found in dogs over the age of 7 years. Bone Tumors in dogs and cats can be classified into two types. Primary, one that has evolved directly in the bone; and Secondary, one that has spread due to the metastasizing of a tumor in another part of the body. Primary bone tumors include Osteosarcoma, Chondrosarcoma, Fibrosarcoma, and Hemangiosarcoma. Out of these, Osteosarcoma is the most common and accounts for about 95% of all bone cancers.

Symptoms of Cancer in Dogs and Cats

Cancer could be difficul to detect in pets. The fur on their body may hide the tumors until they grow too big. Our pets cannot report pain & inflammation, and we often have to rely on secondary symptoms to manifest. Sometimes, the symptoms of cancer may be misdiagnosed as other local infections or medical issues. It’s important that we recognize the symptoms of cancer and catch them as soon as they manifest. Timely action can save your pet’s life. Following are some of the common symptoms of Cancers in Pets.

1. Chronic Weight & Appetite Loss
   If your pet loses a significant amount of weight, without you having to put them on a diet, you need to get him checked by a veterinarian. This is not solely a sign of cancer but does indicate that there is something wrong that needs addressing. Pets with cancer display a sudden loss in weight.
2. Offensive Oral Odor & Pale Gums
   An oral tumor may cause your pet to change his food preferences from hard to soft food, they may also change their usual chewing pattern. A foul odor from the mouth or unusually pale gums are indicators of oral tumors. A thorough oral examination by your vet can tell if there is an underlying issue.
3. Persistent Coughing
   Though there can be many causes of a cough in dogs and cats, a dry cough in older pets should not be ignored. A cough is the most common sign of lung cancer is pets.
4. Chronic Vomiting or Diarrhea
   Tumors of the Gastrointestinal tract can cause unexplained vomiting or diarrhea. They prompt the need for further examination and a radiograph, ultrasound or endoscopy may help diagnose the cause.
5. Lameness or Stiffness
   Bone cancer may cause lameness in your dog or cat, especially if they are a large, heavy breed. A radiograph of the affected limb can help conclude the reason for lameness.
6. Straining to Urinate
   If your pet has been straining to urinate, or you have spotted blood in their urine, it may be a urinary tract infection. If the bleeding and straining do not subside or stop, a cancer in the bladder could be the cause. A cystoscopy can help your veterinarian come to a conclusion on the cause.
7. Unexplained Bleeding or Bodily Discharge
   Bleeding disorders in younger pets are common, but when unexplained bleeding is observed in an older pet, an examination is required. Any bleeding from the mouth, nose, penis, vagina, gums that is not due to trauma should be addressed with urgency.
8. Abdominal Distension
   A rapid enlargement of the abdomen or bleeding in the area may be indicative of a mass or tumor in the abdomen. A radiograph or ultrasound of the abdomen help in diagnosis and concluding if cancer is a reason.
9. A Growing or Changing Lump
   A lump of any kind on your pet dog or cat should be examined at the earliest. Lumps are the most common sign of a developing tumor and a biopsy should be conducted when one is noticed.
10. Swollen Lymph Nodes
    Lymph nodes are located throughout the body but can most easily be found behind the jaw or knee of your pet. A swelling in lymph nodes is an indicator of lymphoma. A biopsy or cytology of these nodes can help in the diagnosis.

Preventing Pet Cancer in your Dog or Cat

Having your pet diagnosed with cancer can be a heartbreaking experience for you as a pet parent. But as much as you’d like to blame it on fate, the choices you make for your pet do dictate a lot on how his health and life pan out. One wrong decision severely affects their lives, and a few wise choices may help you provide them with the best they deserve. No one must have to see their pet go through a cancer, and to ensure your pet is healthy and safe, you need to take note of a few things.

1. Know the risks
   As mentioned under the various types of cancers above, certain breeds are genetically susceptible to certain types of cancer. Know the risks your pet’s breed has and make choices for them accordingly. Have your pet male/female spayed or neutered while they are young to avoid the risk of testicular or mammary gland cancer. Have regular check-ups done for the cancers your pet could develop. And get advice from your veterinarian to help counteract any possible mutations in the future.
2. Always check for abnormalities
   Observing your pet’s habits and noticing any changes they display can help you detect a cancer in its early stage. Other than behavioral changes watch out for swellings, lumps, stiffness in any part of your pet’s body. Do not shrugg off lethargy, dehydration, loss of appetite and thirst, excessive vomiting and diarrhea.
3. Give them healthy food, clean water, plenty of exercise and lots of love!
   Just like humans, the basic components of your pet’s health are healthy food, clean water and a lot of exercise. Toxins in tap water can affect pets the same way it can affect humans. The lack of exercise coupled with an unhealthy diet can lead to obesity which is the foundation of all health issues.

 
We also cannot stress enough on the need for a healthy, nourishing diet. When your pet’s body receives all the nutrition it needs, the probability of any any health condition, however minor or major, affecting them reduces drastically! Pet bodies were not made to get their fill from overly processed packaged kibble. Not only does commercial pet food fail to meet your pet’s needs, but it also comes loaded with preservatives and toxins that your pet should not have to digest ever. Every pet deserves real food, it helps them not only survive but thrive.
